A RETIRED teacher has glided into a new way of life after shedding the pounds.
Mike Jordan, 61, from Washington, was able to take up a glider lesson after losing three stone with Slimming World.
The father-of-two, was given the lesson as a gift for his 60th birthday, but as his weight continued to increase it was becoming less likely that he would be able to take up the opportunity as there is an upper weight limit.
Now, he is flying high in a new career as a Slimming World consultant and hopes to motivate and support others to start their journey to successful weight loss.
Mike said he had always struggled with his weight throughout his adult life and, following his retirement, this weight increased which brought problems to his health, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and type two diabetes.
Now, three stone lighter, his health issues are under control and he is looking forward to enjoying his grandchildren and a healthier lifestyle. Mike said: “My first visit to group felt like the first day at school. I had a feeling of excitement and dread.
“However, with the support of my wife and daughter I went along. The group was so welcoming and so supportive and the consultant immediately put me at ease.
“I had not thought that I would last the first week, let alone reach my target weight, but the atmosphere in group is fantastic and we all support each other.”
Now, a year later, Mike has been at his target weight for six months and completely changed his eating habits. He said Slimming World allows for varied and interesting eating and he was even allowed chocolate and alcohol. He has relaunched the Newbottle Social Club Slimming World group on Tuesdays at 7.30pm
