Two of its rescue officers, who were wearing dry suits and life jackets, entered the water and secured a rope to the vehicle, as the high tide was approaching within hours.

The effort prevented it from being submerged even further or from floating out.

A spokesman for HM Coastguard added: "We informed the port of Seaham who decided to attend with their pilot boat and use heavy duty rope to make a stronger anchor, as vessels enter the marina and did not want the vehicle breaking free.

"Once everyone was happy it was secure we were able to stand down and return to station.

"The owner arranged for recovery the next morning at low tide."
