A FOOTBALL match was abandoned after a referee was hurt in an altercation.
Ronnie Chambers, from Blackhall, was injured just minutes into the Sunday league match between Hartlepool teams Welfare Athletc and DPM Carpets in Division One of the town’s Sunday Morning Football League.
It is said he suffered facial injuries in a disturbance, which led the match being stopped.
It happened after he had awarded a penalty to DPM Carpets and had waved away calls for a free kick in favour of the opposing team’s goalkeeper, who was then sent off for foul and abusive language.
One player of Welfare Athletic has said the referee’s face had been splattered with blood and the ground caretaker had called police.
However, the player suspected of causing the trouble had gone by the time officers arrived.
Cleveland Police later arrested and detained a man on suspicion of assault after a man went to a police station later in the day.
Mr Chambers was treated at a health centre.
