A rapid emergency response has been scrambled after a multi-vehicle road crash in Sunderland this morning.
One person has been taken to hospital after the collision - believed to have involved at least two cars - in Ryhope Road.
A rapid response ambulance and two other ambulances were sent out to the scene at 10am this morning.
One of the ambulance crews is still at the site.
A North East Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We received a call at 10am this morning concerning a multi-vehicle road traffic collision in Ryhope Road.
"We sent a rapid response crew and two ambulances, one of which is still at the scene.
"One person has been transported to hospital."
The extent of the person's injuries are not yet known.
One motorist who witnessed the emergency presence said: "It looked like there might have been a nasty accident.
"When I went past there were three ambulances and four of five cars at the scene.
"It was at the toll bar traffic lights on Ryhope Road."
