WAKE up, smell the coffee and help raise £8.5million for a lifeline charity.
That’s the message from Macmillan Cancer Support as it launches this year’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.
The charity hopes to raise £68,000 on Wearside to contribute to its record-breaking fund-raising target of £8.5million.
The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, launched in 1990, has grown to become the charity’s largest fund-raising event.
Macmillan’s fund-raiser for Sunderland, Sarah Goldie, said: “The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is always really popular, probably because it’s a really easy event to take part in.
“This is the event’s 21st birthday and Macmillan’s 100th birthday so we are determined to raise more money than ever and make this year’s our biggest ever.”
The idea is that people hold their own coffee morning in their homes, work places or local community.
They ask for donations in return for drinks and cakes and then pass on the proceeds to Macmillan.
Sarah added: “Across Wearside about 300 people held coffee mornings to raise money for Macmillan last year.
“Some people hold just a small event with friends, while others go all out and organise a big community party.”
Although the official World’s Biggest Coffee Morning day is Friday, September 30, Macmillan is happy for people to hold events on a day that suits them.
l There are two events being held on August 11 from 10am-noon at Roker Hotel, Sunderland, and 6pm-8pm at Souter Lighthouse.
