WEARSIDERS are being urged to support the 12th annual Tyne Tunnel 2K International wheelchair race.
It takes place next Friday at 9am when some of the world’s elite paralympic athletes will race under the depths of the River Tyne in Tunnel One.
The race, sponsored by The Port of Tyne, combines speed, technical ability, physical fitness and stamina, providing a challenge that these world-class athletes find irresistible.
Susan Wear, Port of Tyne director of corporate affairs, said: “The Port of Tyne is delighted to be supporting the 12th annual Tyne Tunnel wheelchair race and welcoming athletes who come from all over the world.
“This year there’s extra excitement because many of them have been competing for gold in the Paralympics and will be at their competitive peak.
“And, of course, some of them will be going for top places in the Great North Run as well.”
Paralympians competing in the Tyne Tunnel 2K race include Josh Cassidy from Canada, Josh George from the USA, Richard Colman from Australia and GB paralympians Mickey Bushell, Jade Jones, and Jamie Carter.
