THE question of whether a city should get a new set of councils to represent their communities will be answered next week.
Durham could get new parish councils under the plans.
They will be considered after consultation by Durham County Council about proposals for new parish councils for the city and the Newton Hall area, the expansion of Framwellgate Moor’s boundary and parish meetings for Aykley Vale, Priory Road and Dryburn Park.
Its members will be asked to vote on the issue at a full council meeting on Wednesday.
Research showed more than half of those asked said they backed the idea.
Colette Longbottom, head of legal and democratic services, said: “Gauging public opinion on this has been a long-standing commitment by the county council and the process is now nearing its close.
“Since the completion of the consultations, the cross-party constitutional working group has considered these results and the representations received.
“Having concluded that the matter is very finely balanced, the group will be presenting two options for a vote at full council.”
