THE Duke of Edinburgh will rename the City of Adelaide clipper in a ceremony held as preparations continue to export the Sunderland-built ship to Australia.

Buckingham Palace has confirmed Prince Philip will lead the event in Greenwich, London, on Friday, October 18.

It is expected the clipper, carried on a giant barge, will be moored in the River Thames, close to its famous younger ‘sister’ the Cutty Sark, before she begins her journey to Port Adelaide.

The celebration will be held after the City of Adelaide Preservation Trust beat off a campaign to move the ship to Wearside.

Sunderland City of Adelaide Recovery Fund (Scarf) has been leading the calls to return her to the place where she was built as part of a heritage project.
