A PREGNANT motorist was injured in a serious smash with what police believe to be a stolen motorbike.

The woman was driving her car in Burnhope Way, near to the junction with Beverley Way in Peterlee, when she and the bike, which was being ridden by a man and a passenger, collided. The rider of the bike was taken to hospital in a critical condition and his passenger also sustained serious injuries.

The female driver also suffered injuries from the crash, which happened at about 5.30pm on Friday.

In a separate incident, firefighters had to rescue a woman from her car after it smashed into the central reservation of a Wearside road. Crews from North Moor fire station were called to the A182 road at Shiney Row at 8.30pm on Saturday where the Vauxhall Corsa had crashed.

A spokesman for the station said no other vehicles were involved, and the driver was taken to hospital with possible spinal injuries.
