STAFF and students at a Sunderland school said their thoughts are with a youngster hit by a bus.

A 12-year-old Monkwearmouth School pupil was seriously injured on Tuesday afternoon when he was hit by the bus in nearby Dovedale Road.

Northumbria Police said the student remains in a stable condition in Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary this morning.

The accident happened at school leaving time, 3.15pm, when hundreds of young people were making their way home.

Steve Wilkinson, headteacher at the Torver Crescent school, said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

“We are immensely proud of the way in which our students conducted themselves at the scene of the accident.”

The boy, who has not been named, suffered head, pelvis, chest and abdominal injuries and had to be airlifted to hospital.

A helicopter from the Great North Air Ambulance Service landed in Mere Knolls Cemetery and air ambulance staff worked with North East Ambulance Service paramedics to stabilise the boy.

He was then placed on a board for the six-minute flight to hospital.

Part of the busy street remained cordoned off yesterday morning as officers continued their investigations.

Any witnesses should phone police on 101 ex 69191.
