Power cut sends Sunderland homes into darkness

MORE than 50 homes in Sunderland were affected by a day-long power cut.

People living in the Doxford Park area were left without electricity until shortly before 11pm on Wednesday.

Supplies were cut off from 9am to 4pm so essential repairs could be carried out, but engineers were not able to reconnect power.

A total of 54 homes were without power, including sheltered accommodation for old people.

Refreshments and torches were handed out to vulnerable customers by staff from Northern Powergrid.

A spokesman for the electricity distributor said repairs were completed shortly before 11pm.

An underground cable fault was blamed for the outage.
