THOUSANDS of homes, businesses and public buildings were hit by a large-scale power cut in central Sunderland.

A total of 2,819 customers were left without power when a fault knocked out electricity supplies yesterday afternoon.

Sunderland University’s City Campus on Chester Road was one of the organisations affected.

However, no graduation ceremonies had been scheduled for the day.

A spokesman for Ce Electric UK, responsible for supplying electricity to customers in the North East, said the power cut began at 1.37pm. The majority of customers had power back on by 2.44pm, but about 300 had to wait until 3.37pm.

The cause of the power cut is under investigation, but is believed to have been due to an underground cable fault.

A spokesman for Ce Electric thanked customers for their patience while its staff worked to restore power supplies.
