Police urge vigilance after bogus caller steals cash

Householders are reminded to be vigilant after a bogus workman stole money from a Sunderland woman.

The incident happened around 10.30am on Wednesday at an address in Side Cliff Road, Roker.

A man knocked on the door and told the occupant the guttering needed repairing.

She gave him money to carry out the work, however, he walked off with the money.

He is described as in his 40s or 50s, of medium build, with short dark hair. He was wearing dark overalls and a jacket and travelled in a silver van.

Officers are appealing for anyone who was in Side Cliff Road and saw the man, or may have been visited in similar circumstances, to get in contact.

Residents are also reminded to be on their guard that bogus callers are operating in the area and be cautious to people who call at the door unanounced - if any doubt they should turn them away and contact police.
