Police staff await sentencing over prisoner’s assault

TWO police staff who assaulted a prisoner will have to wait to learn their fate.

 Police custody sergeant Stephen Harvey, 50, twisted shopkeeper David Healer’s arm while civilian detention officer Michael Mount, 61, looked on.

 The attack, condemned as “a form of torture”, happened at Peterlee Police Station when Mr Healer, 48, was arrested on suspicion of breaching bail.

 Harvey, of Chester-le-Street, and Mount, of, Thornley, were due to be sentenced at Teesside Magistrates’ Court after being convicted of assault by beating.

 The case had been due to go ahead but was adjourned yesterday afternoon.

 Magistrates have now agreed that the pair will be sentenced on Friday, May 11.

 Harvey and Mount were given unconditional bail.

bailed unconditionally until that date.
