POLICE searching for missing Washington man Colin Pine have found a body.

Police received a report from a member of the public that a man’s body had been found on the banks of the River Wear in St Luke’s Road in Sunderland at 11.03am on Saturday.

Officers attended and the body was recovered.

Enquiries are ongoing to formally identify the man.

Football fan Mr Pine, 55, of Ennerdale in Albany, Washington, failed to return home after going out to watch the Sunderland/Newcastle derby match on Sunday, December 21.

Durham Police said the discovery is not connected to the search for missing 19-year-old student Euan Coulthard.

The RNLI said it removed the body from mudflats.

A police spokeswoman said: “Police searching for missing Washington man Colin Pine have found a body.

“Police received a report from a member of the public that a man’s body had been found on the banks of the River Wear in St Luke’s Road in Sunderland. Officers attended and the body was recovered.

“Enquiries are ongoing to formally identify the man.”

The RNLI said its Sunderland inshore lifeboat Northern Light along with the local Coastguard rescue team recovered the body from close to the hulk of a concrete tug.

It was taken back to the lifeboat station to be handed over to police and paramedics.
