Police investigating 'unexplained' car fire in Ryhope street

Police are treating a car fire as ‘unexplained’ as an investigation into the incident in Ryhope is launched.

Emergency services were called to Black Road, in Ryhope, on Sunday evening (March 7) to reports of a car alight in the street.

Police have now confirmed they are investigating the incident to determine the cause of the fire and if any criminal offences have been committed.

Firefighters from Farringdon Community Fire Station attended at 7.45pm and had extinguished the flames and left the scene in under 15 minutes.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 8pm yesterday (Sunday) we received a report of a car that was on fire on Black Road, Ryhope, Sunderland.

“Emergency services attended and the fire was extinguished. Nobody was injured.

“The cause of the fire is currently being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing with the fire service to determine whether any criminal offences have been committed.”
