A Cumbrian police force has sparked Twitter outrage by asking why would anyone want to travel to Sunderland.

As storm Desmond caused havoc across the north over the weekend many members of the public took to Twitter for updates of road closures.

One user @annalouiseloves was keen to travel back to Wearside and sent Barrow Police, which covers the Barrow-in-Furness area in Cumbria, a message yesterday.

She Tweeted: "Checking @barrowpolice all the time to see whether it's safe to drive back to Sunderland in the morning #CumbriaFloods #StaySafe."

However. the force Tweeted back the rather unhelpful message of: "Why would anyone want to go to Sunderland."

To which Anna replied: "I live near Sunderland #obvs."

The tweet has so far been shared almost 300 times.

The force has been contacted for a comment.
