This week's story
The global financial meltdown can be traced to the era of pirates in the 17th century – claims a senior politics lecturer at Sunderland University.
Dr Peter Hayes argues that the roots of modern democracy were not in Britain or the U.S., but were the "corporations" which were created on pirate ships during the golden age of buccaneering.
Dr Hayes said: "Pirates elected their captain, voted on major decisions and distributed their booty in roughly equal shares, and there is something in the idea that a pirate ship is the equivalent of a modern corporation."
The robbers hid their profits in tax havens and those who stole foreign wealth were welcomed by the government of the day and received by high society – as long as they were successful and gave a cut to the state.
He said financiers – much like modern multinational PLCs – would pay to kit out a ship, which would sail in search of gold to steal.
