East Durham College has spent the summer working alongside a new ice cream parlour. Truly Scrumptious is based in Castle Dene Shopping Centre and in August owner Steve Jones, contacted East Durham College employability team to get help in finding a new workforce. The college team was delighted to help, holding a successful recruitment open event which saw 100 applicants attend at the college’s Peterlee campus. This was then narrowed down to 20, who all went on to work towards customer service qualifications with employability team member Pamela Gordon-Dixon and health and hygiene qualifications before Steve selected the final nine.
Peterlee Walking Club organises graded walks each month for all abilities and transport is usually arranged by the club, leaving from Peterlee Lodge car park on Sunday at 8.30am. The next walk is this Sunday to Danby. For information, ring 0191 586 3009.
County Durham Housing Group is recruiting tenants and leaseholders to its new customer panel, VOCAL – the voice of the customer and leaseholder. The group will represent those living in the 18,400 homes, collectively owned and managed by Dale & Valley Homes, Durham City Homes and East Durham Homes. VOCAL will meet every quarter to discuss the issues faced by residents. Potential candidates will need to complete a short application form, with informal interviews scheduled for week commencing Monday, December 12. Once again, The Academy at Shotton Hall open evening was a huge success with hundreds of families visiting to get a taste of life at the Academy. Parents and children were given the VIP treatment and participated in a range of activities such as mask making, treasure hunting, cooking and scientific experiments. Students and parents were involved in a performance in the music department. Applications to the Academy for September 2017 places are open until Monday, October 31.
Residents and staff at Field View Care Home in Blackhall raised £300 to provide Helford Under 11s Football Club with new home strips. The team, coaches and family members visited the home to thank everyone for their help in raising the money and show off their new orange kits.
