A PERIOD drama set in the region attracted 5.5million viewers for its debut episode.

The Paradise, which is filmed at The Lambton Estate, near Bournmoor, won its 9pm slot on Tuesday with a 23.1 per cent audience share.

It was up against ITV1’s Midsomer Murders, which attracted an average of 4.3million.

The Paradise is set in an 1870’s department store and is loosely adapted by Bill Gallagher from an Emile Zola novel. The second episode will be screened tomorrow at 9pm.

The Paradise is the biggest programme of its kind to be made in the region.

The rags-to-riches story stars Sarah Lancashire.
