Perfect pint in a proper pub
NOTHING could be more welcoming on a winter's evening than an open fire and a perfectly pulled pint.
And if it's good enough for Niall Quinn, then it's good enough for me.
The Sunderland Chairman has been known to pull a stool up at the Museum Vaults and he has offered the pub his endorsement by way of his signature above the bar.
The cosy and quirky surrounds of this ancient little building makes this hidden gem one of the best pubs in Sunderland.
It is as a public house should be, with clutter and character everywhere you look as well as an amazing jukebox and a constantly changing range of ales.
This week punters can choose from Ryhope Tug, from the Bull Lane Brewery, Sunderland, or Workie Ticket, from Mordue's Brewery, for 2.40 a pint.
If it's premium lager you're after, I can tell you first-hand the barman pulls the finest pint of Stella Artois I've ever tasted for 2.65 or Becks for 2.60.
There is even something special on offer in the soft drinks section with Victorian-style lemonade and traditional dandelion and burdock for 1.50 a bottle.
There is plenty of banter at the bar with colourful characters ready to welcome newcomers with a bit crack and a genuinely warm atmosphere.
If the conversation isn't grabbing you why not retreat to a quiet corner and grab one of the fantastic reads on offer in the pub's book swap?
Titles include, Fight Club by Chuck Palahnick, Train Spotting by Irvine Welsh, or The Outsider by Albert Camus.
It was the jukebox which held my attention, coupled with the barman's dance moves, and I was mesmerised by the music selection.
Albums include classics from Thin Lizzy, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, The Clash, The Doors, The Sex Pistols, The Pogues, The Beatles, Elton Jonn and Sunderland's own Futureheads.
Football is high on the agenda with the Black Cats colours in every corner and every match shown on the plasma screen.
The Museum Vaults smells like a pub, looks like a pub and does everything a pub is supposed to do. It brings people together and invites them to relax and forget about the world outside.
You can leave your glossy chain pubs and meal deals, I will pick a real pub any day of the week.
