A pensioner suffered a broken leg after being hit by a car on a Wearside road last night.

The 67-year-old pedestrian is believed to have been travelling home home from Sunderland's Premier League clash with Liverpool when he was knocked down on the slip road from the A1231 southbound onto the A19 at about 10.20pm.

The ambulance service were called to the scene and transported the man to Newcastle's RVI Hospital, where he is being treated for a broken leg.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesman said: "A gentleman, aged 67, was found in the road after being hit by a car.

"We had one ambulance crew who attended and transported the man to the RVI.

"He had suffered a fracture to his leg."
