A MAN has died after he was hit by a van as he walked along a road.

The victim, who was in his mid-40s, was walking along the westbound stretch of the B6313 at Bluehouse Bank, from Pelton Fell towards Grange Villa, near Chester-le-Street, at about 11.30pm yesterday.

He was involved in a collision with a Ford Transit Tipper vehicle travelling in the same direction.

He suffered a fatal head injury and was confirmed dead at the scene.

The van driver, a local man in his mid-30s, was not injured.

Sergeant Lee Morris, of Durham Constbulary’s road policing unit, said there is no footpath at the location where the collision occurred and it is believed the victim, who was wearing dark clothing, was walking with his back to oncoming traffic.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or saw the victim or the vehicle involved shortly before it occurred, is asked to call the non-emergency number 101 and ask for the road policing unit or the collision investigation department.
