A SECTION of the Tyne and Wear Metro is to close for 23 days for modernisation work.
The work between Wallsend and Tynemouth will see six kilometres of Metro track replaced.
It will start on Saturday and run until Monday, September 3.
A high-frequency replacement bus service will ensure passengers experience as little inconvenience as possible when the Metro line is closed.
During the closure period Metro services to other parts of the network will operate as normal.
The work forms part of the £385million Metro: All change modernisation programme, the largest series of capital projects on the system since it opened more than 30 years ago.
Director general of Nexus Bernard Garner said: “The work is vital to secure the future of this section of Metro line and provide big improvements to the passenger experience.”
The transport boss added: “We are once again focussed on North Tyneside, but in years to come other parts of the network will also undergo major programmes of modernisation.”
