FIRE crews were called out to extinguish a blaze in Hendon.

Eight firefighters were dispatched from the Sunderland East station to a two-storey semi-detached house in Sunderland after a fire had started in the kitchen, at 4.15pm on Saturday.

The owner of the house managed to escape before the emergency services arrived. He was administered oxygen, but refused any further hospital treatment.

The kitchen was destroyed in the fire with the rest of the ground floor being 70 per cent damaged.

Fire crews estimate that the first floor will also be 100 per cent damaged.
