Olympics-style welcome crew wanted to greet visitors arriving in Durham for the Ashes

A TEAM is being recruited to give a cricket crowd a warm welcome when they visit the region for the Ashes.

Durham County Cricket Club will host the match against Australia at its ground in Chester-le-Street in August.

The event is expected to draw in thousands of visitors to the region, giving it a boost and securing its place on the world map of the game.

Organisers are searching for supporters to step forward to play a part in how it runs in the same way the Games Makers did at last summer’s Olympics.

Richard Dowson, chief operating officer at the club, said: “We are looking for volunteers who are hard working and motivated, and have a passion for sport and events, but also are determined to help the club ensure that an event of this stature will be delivered successfully.

The Ashes Makers project is being backed by the Chester-le-Street and District Area Action Partnership, which is run by Durham County Council.

Anyone interested in signing up as a volunteer between August 8 and 13 can email nicola.wilson@durhamccc.co.uk.
