BUSINESSES in Durham are being urged to make the most of the Olympic torch relay’s visit to the city.
Durham County Council have written to local businesses, giving tips on how best to maximise their potential profits as the iconic flame reaches the region this weekend.
Coun Neil Foster, cabinet member for regeneration and economic development, has encouraged business to make the most of the excitement drummed up by the 70-day relay and also warned local bosses to ensure they factor in any road closures if making or receiving deliveries.
He said: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and we expect many thousands of people across the county to line the streets and fill the towns.
“Consider whether by extending or altering your opening hours or changing what you do in any way, you can benefit from the increased footfall near you and help us make this an even better experience for all.”
In Durham, thousands of people are expected to come into the centre for celebration events on June 16, 17 and 20.
