Officers have branded a police chase driver an 'idiot' - tweeting a picture of a sarcastic sticker attached to his car.

Cleveland and Durham's Road Policing Unit pursued a silver car through Murton and Rainton early on Thursday.

The driver was subsequently arrested after the vehicle crashed.

Durham RPU's twitter account tweeted about the incident, using the hashtag #idiot.

The unit wrote on its facebook page: "Vehicle pursued around Murton and Rainton.

"This is the actual sticker from the back of his car.

"No we don't want a race, idiot, but if you try and get away we will catch you."

Sean Wallace-docherty commented on the photograph, saying: "Classic, a race with the RPU - I know who my monies on lol"

Barbara Hughes said: "Yes, definitely an idiot," while Phil Burton had a different view, adding: "No sense of humour."
