KICKING off the Olympics with a faith dimension in Sunderland, were nine Norwegians hosted by St Gabriel’s Church.

The volunteers, aged between 19 and 27 are part of Youth With A Mission (YWAM).

They helped to lead a week-long holiday club at St Gabriel’s for 45 youngsters called Champions Challenge, with songs, music, art and craft work, sketches and games.

It was all part of the More than Gold initiative, a international Christian missionary movement designed to bring a faith dimension to Olympic enthusiasm.

While in the city the Norwegian party linked up with the Chapel of Light church – a free evangelical church with African leadership – which has taken over St Columba’s in Southwick.

At St Gabriel’s they also helped to lead Sunday worship and a young people’s disco.

Throughout the week some 300 YWAM volunteers visited the region.

Everyone involved gathered on the Baltic Quays in Gateshead, with a Viking longship joining the festivities.
