WE have been sent this fantastic photo from a reader of the Northern Lights over the North Sea last night.

The stunning snap by Russ Norman shows the mesmerising green swathes of the natural phenomenon off the coast of East Durham.

The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, is usually seen over the Arctic.

The origin of the aurora begins on the surface of the sun when solar activity ejects a cloud of gas. If one of these reaches earth, after around two to three days, it collides with the Earth’s magnetic field, causing the magnificent display.

Russ sent us the image through Twitter – and now we want to see if anyone else caught the stunning sight on camera.
