Who’s the best in business when it comes to arts, culture, hospitality and leisure.

Which great organisation is the tops in everything from restaurants to children’s venues.

How about telling us all about the tops in takeaways to parks and community areas, and hotels to the best shopping experience.

We want to know because the What’s On Where Awards are back - held in association with our weekly entertainments guide, Wow 24/7.

We are looking for the very best there is in Sunderland and South Tyneside.

And once we find them, we will reward the winners through our awards which are held in association with our weekly entertainments guide, Wow 24/7.

From now until February 1, we are asking our readers to put forward their favourites in each of the categories listed on this page. We will be revealing the winners on Thursday, February 25 in a glittering finale at The Best Western Roker Hotel.

You could be following in the footsteps of last year’s winners, including the Empire Theatre in Sunderland which picked up an Outstanding Contribution award for the way it brings the best West End theatre performances to the North East.

Other winners included The Bridges shopping venue, Sunderland Live, Make My Day Events, Chaise Guest House, the Ivy House, Gatsbys, the Raich Carter centre, Roma and Paul Dunn for his performance in I Left My Heart In Roker Park.

South Tyneside venues Bents Park, Jarrovians Rugby Club, Little Haven Hotel and Dunes also collected honours.

A special recognition awards went to the Best Western Tavistock Roker Hotel while Ray Spencer MBE collected the Lifetime Achievement honour for his tireless work in the entertainments scene.

We want to find the successors to those fantastic winners and we need your nominations for this year’s competition which already has a fantastic sponsor behind it in Hebburn-based UK Asbestos Specialists (UKasl).

So send in your entries and put your favourites in the running.

And if there’s more than one cause that you love, put them all in the running and make the judges’ job really hard.

A night to remember

Finalists in the What’s On Where awards can look forward to a fantastic night in wonderful surroundings.

The Best Western Roker Hotel will once again be the hosts for our competition which recognises the elite in everything from restaurants to children’s venues, takeaways to parks and community areas, and hotels to the best shopping experience.

Nominations can be sent in to the Sunderland Echo or Shields Gazette now and until the deadline of February 1.

After that, we will draw up a shortlist before revealing the winners at the finale on Thursday, February 25.

It will be held in the Roker Hotel’s grand room - the latest part of the award-winning venue to undergo changes.

The grand room now boasts its own cocktail bar where guests can buy some of the hotel’s highly acclaimed drinks - including those made at the Roker Hotel’s own in-house distillery.

Within the last two years, there has also been investment in the Let There Be Crumbs Cakery and Tea Room, the Italian Farmhouse, and the transformation of function spaces such as the Grand Room into the Six Soldiers Suite and the Pier Lounge into the Dobson Lounge

The awards audience will be treated to top-notch food as well as finding out who will lift trophies. All that will happen on finals night next year.

The Best Western Roker Hotel has become a regular venue for our big night. General manager Nuno de Francisco said: “We are honoured to be the home for the awards. We had a fabulous time last year and it is great to have them back again.”

Marketing manager Grace Noon said: “Last year went fantastically well and that was echoed throughout the room.”

She highlighted other improvements in the hotel, such as the beautiful Poetic License bar which serves soul food and is home to the distillery where Northern Dry Gin, Old Tom Gin and Graceful Vodka is all made.

After a year of many changes, the Roker’s philosophy of trying to offer something different has paid dividends.

It won the special recognition award at the What’s On Where competition and the leisure award at the Sunderland Echo Portfolio finals.

We want nominations for this year’s competition - held in association with our weekly entertainments guide, Wow 24/7 - which will culminate at the Best Western Roker Hotel next February.

Sponsors already on board are Hebburn-based UK Asbestos Specialists (UKasl).
