The organisers South Tyneside annual fireworks display have apologised after cancelling the shows at the last minute - but hope it will mean the borough’s help Christmas celebrations start with some extra sparkle.

Thousands were left disappointed when the two displays were called off due to high winds on Sunday evening.

A council spokesman said: “We have a good relationship with the company that arranges the fireworks displays.
“The fireworks that can be salvaged will be used to enhance the display at this year’s Camel Parade on Friday, December 2.

“We recognise the disappointment caused by the cancellation of the event but hope the weather is on our side next month when people can look forward to a spectacular display at the Camel Parade as part of our Christmas events line-up.”

South Tyneside Events told Facebook followers a final check found conditions were too dangerous.

South Tyneside Council spokeswoman

Angela Little, writing on the Gazette’s Facebook page, said: “All the people complaining, what if wind had swept a firework at your child?

“They can’t make a decision on the weather six hours in advance, it’s a free event.

“If you spent the day down there that’s your call, just unfortunate.”

Joanne Moore added “Definitely the right decision but would have been good to have been notified sooner.

“Especially after disappointing the kids and trailing them out in the cold unnecessarily.”
