THERE will be no minute’s silence for Margaret Thatcher ahead of Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby between Newcastle and Sunderland, the Magpies have confirmed.
The Premier League has not asked clubs to pay tribute to the former Prime Minister and Newcastle will not do so.
A spokesman said: “We are following the guidance issued by the Premier League to all clubs.”
The atmosphere at St James’ Park will be electric as the home side attempt to end their own fears of being dragged into the fight against relegation by deepening the visitors’ woes.
But in a part of the country where Mrs Thatcher was hugely unpopular with many people, the prospect of a minute’s silence being observed by either set of supporters was remote in any case.
