Police watchdog the IPCC has said an investigation into the death of a man who fell from Sunderland’s Wearmouth Bridge should be carried out by Northumbria Police.

A IPCC spokeswoman said today: “The case was referred to the IPCC by Northumbria Police.
“We assessed the information provided in the referral and determined the matter should be investigated locally by Northumbria Police.”
Police were called to the bridge in Sunderland around 3.30pm on Tuesday after concern was raised for the man.
Officers attempted to speak him, but he subsequently fell from the bridge and sadly died.
