NIALL Quinn today gave his support to smokers who are attempting to quit.
Today is No Smoking Day and the Sunderland AFC chairman is backing the campaign to encourage people to stub out their habit.
Niall said: “The history of our region has presented us with significant health challenges but attitudes towards healthy living have certainly changed for the better in recent years.
“That progress has helped us to enjoy increasingly-healthier and happier lifestyles.
“I would encourage any steps that contribute towards improving the wellbeing of our region, so if people are trying to quit smoking for the first time on No Smoking Day, or if they are giving it another go, I wish them all the best.”
Last year, one-in-four smokers from the North East attempted to quit on No Smoking Day. About 114,000 smokers are expected to try to give up during this year’s campaign, which has the theme of “Time to Quit?”.
Niall has given his backing to the Echo’s Tackling Men’s Health campaign, which is urging Wearside’s male population to take steps to improve their health.
