Rival football fans to play to raise funds for Bradley Lowery

Rival fans are getting set to take to pitch battle to raise funds for a youngster who is battling cancer.

A team of Sunderland supporters will take on their Newcastle counterparts in a friendly match in South Tyneside on March 24 to raise cash for five-year-old Bradley Lowery.

The match, organised by brothers Damian and Stuart Pearce, will be played out at Mariners Park, South Shields, the home of South Shields Football Club.

Bradley Lowery is currently fighting for his life against neuroblastoma and his battle has touched the hearts of people all over the country.

Mr Pearce said: “I’ve been following Bradley’s story and just wanted to do something to help him. I contacted a few people and it was decided to hold a match between Sunderland and Newcastle fans .

“We have received great support from South Shields Football Club which is letting us use their 3G pitch for the match.”

He added: “We’re all looking forward to taking part in the game and seeing which team will come out on top and win the charity shield.”

The teams will be playing for the Harry Pearce charity shield, named in memory of Mr Pearce’s grandfather.

Throughout the game a raffle will be held and the bar will also be open on the night with refreshments also available for those turning out to support the players and the cause.

Mr Pearce added: “We would love to see as many people as possible coming out on the night and help get behind Bradley’s cause.”

The youngster from Blackhall, County Durham, is battling cancer for a second time and was undergoing his latest round of treatment last week.

His fight against the disease has touched the hearts of the footballing community throughout the country.

In December his parents, Gemma and Carl, were told that - despite rounds of chemotherapy - his tumours have not shrunk, and the time they now have left to spend with their son is limited.

The aim of the latest drugs is to prolong the life of the young Sunderland fan.

Last month his mum revealed how doctors found a new tumour following a CT scan.

The charity football match will kick off at 8pm.

There is no entry fee but people are encouraged to make a donation on the night.
