Next season’s Sunderland AFC home kit has hit the back of the net with Echo readers.
The club released images of the strip yesterday, with it set to go on sale next week.
Every player is tremendously proud to pull on the historic red and white stripes and we love this new shirt.Jermain Defoe
The shirt bears the name of the club’s principal partner Dafabet and of course features Sunderland’s classic red and white stripes.
The adidas kit has proved popular with fans, with many saying they are impressed with the bold red colour of the strip.
The shorts are Sunderland’s traditional black, with gold detailing.
Red socks make a return for 2016-17 and feature black and gold accents.
Modelling the new kit, striker Jermain Defoe, who was this week voted SAFC Player of the Year, said: “The Sunderland shirt is iconic and instantly recognisable across the world.
“Every player is tremendously proud to pull on the historic red and white stripes and we love this new shirt.”
A poll on www.sunderlandecho.com found that 90% of people who voted gave the kit the thumbs up.
On the Echo’s Facebook page, Michael Liam Mccormick Mcgrath wrote: “Very smart, I’m liking the gold. I’ll be purchasing it.”
But Pete Bogg called on the club to introduce a different design, saying: “Bring back the collar!”
On the Echo’s website, “fatboy777” wrote: “Looks good, better without the black in it.”
J Liam wrote: “So so good to see us return to a predominantly red base.
“Cracking looking kit, only hope we can model it on BBC rather than Channel 5.”
While “monsters” said: “Class that, makes a change to have the shirt ready before the summer when people are more likely to buy it.”
Fans can pre-order the kit online at www.safcstore.com.
It will go on sale on Thursday and will be available online or in the club’s three retail stores; at the Stadium of Light, The Galleries in Washington or Debenhams in The Bridges, Sunderland.
A new away strip for the 2016-17 season is also set to be revealed soon.
