NEW eco-friendly buses are to hit the roads as they ferry passengers across the region.
Go North East is drafting in 15 hybrid vehicles to run on its route between Durham and Newcastle.
The 87-seat Volvos, which are powered by a small diesel engine or 600-volt battery or both working together, will be used on the Angel service.
The buses’ fuel consumption could be up to 30 per cent lower than a conventional diesel vehicle. Exhaust emissions would also be halved.
The buses, to be in use by autumn, also feature wi-fi.
A single-deck hybrid bus will go into service in Sunderland as well.
