New boss aims to keep Durham Cathedral in good shape

Durham Cathedral has appointed a new head of property with overall responsibility for the fabric of the historic building.

Maya Polenz joins the Durham Cathedral team from the City of London Corporation where she was the heritage estate officer for the past three years.

Originally from Dresden in Germany, Maya trained as an architect and during her formative training, volunteered extensively in the heritage sector,

She said: “I first saw Durham Cathedral during a holiday in the area and, although I had seen it from the outside before, I had never been into the building.

“When I stepped inside it was breathtaking, it is such a beautiful space. I never thought I would get the opportunity to work in such a prestigious building.”

Her new role at will require her to oversee the Cathedral’s programme of works, including maintenance and restoration and its surrounding buildings and grounds.”
