FAMILIES can take their fight for fitness outside as they give a new £10,000 alfresco gym a spin.

Traction equipment, a sit-up board, a leg-stretcher and body-building trainer join other equipment at the play area at Murton Memorial Welfare Park.

The gear has been bought with a £9,945 grant from the Big Lottery Fund’s Awards for All kitty, and the new kit has been added to other equipment revamped over recent years for children to use.

A Murton Parish Council spokeswoman said: “The equipment is situated adjacent to our youth centre to provide an alternative attraction to promote health and fitness without having to pay substantial gym costs. The centre attracts youngsters on an evening to participate in indoor activities such as computer games, pool and internet browsing, but this equipment will encourage these young people to go outdoors, giving them an outlet for their frustrations by providing them with extra facilities so they can participate in some physical activity.”
