LITTLE star Reece Monson is only 11 years old, but devotes his time to caring for his ill grandmother.

Now the schoolboy’s care and devotion has earned him a nomination at this year’s Pride of Wearside Awards.

Reece’s gran, Ann Eccles, 61, has suffered with arthritis for 20 years, forcing her to have two knee replacements as well as use a wheelchair outdoors.

Ann says she is so impressed by the support she’s received from Reece, she wanted to nominate him in the Child of Achievement category at this year’s Pride of Wearside Awards.

She said: “He takes me out for walks in my wheelchair, does chores, helps me with my tablets and gives me my injection every two weeks. I couldn’t manage without him. He’s my little star.”

Ann, who has three children – including Reece’s mum Lisa Wyatt – and five grandchildren, also has angina.

She added: “Although my family help me out, Reece is the one who always makes sure I’m okay. He just loves his nana and I love him to bits.

“He’s such a caring boy and always looks out for other people. He works with disabled children at one of the schools in the area and goes along to teach them how to dance. He’s just an amazing person.”

Reece, who goes to Sandhill View School, is a keen sportsman and enjoys trampolining, rugby and swimming. He is also a member of Sunderland’s Young Firefighters Association and hopes to become a firefighter when he leaves school.

Ann added: “I’m so proud of him. He’s such a good kid. He loves being a young firefighter and can’t wait to join properly. Obviously I get a little worried about this, but we’ll always support him, no matter what.”

Reece’s mum Lisa said: “He helps his nana and takes her out wherever she wants to go. He’s such a wonderful little boy, I don’t know where he finds the time to do everything.”
