A Sunderland church was filled with festive cheer as it hosted an annual Christmas concert.

Age UK held its celebration at St John Methodist Church in Ashbrooke, opening with Monkwearmouth’s Salvation Army Band performing the manger scene and Angels from the Realms of Glory.

The celebration also featured operatic bass Graeme Danby, Cheryl Morris, Eleanor Turton, Valerie Reed, Oliver Cook, Dodici Voce, from Sunderland University, and The Salvation Army Northern Summer School 2015 Trimbles.

Roger Webster, the cornet player from the Grimthorpe Colliery Band, also played.

An audience of 350 people gathered for the event, with all proceeds going to the charity. The total amount raised is still being counted up.

A spokesman said: “It was a wonderful evening enjoyed by all.”
