A FUND-RAISING mum is set to pound the pavements of Sunderland so that her sporting star son can take on the world.
Eleven-year-old Zach Marshall, of Castletown, has been selected to represent England at this year’s kickboxing World Championships in Spain in November.
Zach and eight other youngsters from Spartan Fighting Arts Academy, in Hylton Castle, will all be making the journey as they go for gold.
However, the trip is costing each child £800 each, with their families have to raise themselves.
Zach’s loving mum Donna has now signed up for next month’s Sunderland Half Marathon to generate cash.
She has already managed to secure £500 from Akami Flooring, owned by Kevin Carr, who have agreed to sponsor Zach.
“We’ve got to find the money ourselves so this is my way of doing it,” said Donna, 39.
“We’re all doing other things as well but I thought this would be the best idea.
“With it costing £800 each child we’re doing everything we can to get them there.”
Donna, who works at St Mark’s Nursing Home in Millfield, admits she is a novice runner but is putting in the hard yards in preparation for the 13-mile event.
“I’ve run a few miles now and then but never anything over a 10k,” she added.
“So it’s definitely going to be a challenge for me, but one I can’t wait to do.”
