A Seaham mum has been named her slimming group’s woman of the year after shedding 8st.
Danielle Defty, a mum-of-four, was handed the honour by her fellow members at Slimming World.
The 32-year-old has lost 8st, dropping from 20st 11lbs to 12st 11lb, and a size 24 to 28 to 12 to 14.
The mum-of-four said: “While I felt okay as I was I was aware that I was getting bigger and bigger and I knew my mam, dad, and family were worried about me.
“I had to think of my health, and who would take care of my babies if anything happened to me?
“I’d tried so many diets and slimming supplements already, so I researched Slimming World and decided to give it a go because I’d seen some good results from them.”
Danielle said she was sceptical when she first joined the weight loss club.
She added: “I thought it wouldn’t work, but their food optimising plan isn’t like a diet, you can eat so much and it’s amazing.
“I didn’t need to starve myself, I just needed to eat healthier.
“I cook a lot more now and I enjoy it. It’s a lifestyle change not a diet, and that’s the key thing I learned.
“The support I get from the group and from our consultant, Michelle Gallagher, is fantastic.
“We share tips, ideas, support each other and celebrate each other’s successes.
“One of my highlights of the year was being crowned my group’s Woman of the Year. It was wonderful recognition for all I’ve achieved and I felt so emotional and proud.
“It isn’t just about the weight I’ve lost but the life I’ve gained. I can enjoy going clothes shopping without having to rake to the back of the rail for the bigger sizes, and I’m so much more confident.
“I went through my younger years being bullied for being the ‘fat kid’ and losing weight has given my self esteem such a boost.
“I’d recommend Slimming World to everyone – I’m proof that it really does work.”
