A NUMBER of people have been taken to hospital following a multi-vehicle smash which closed the A19 going northbound towards Testo’s roundabout on Monday.
Emergency services were called to the scene, at the junction with the A1290, at noon, and a number of people were rescued from their vehicles.
The extent of any injuries is not yet known by police, although a spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service said one person had been taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary by helicopter.
Accident investigators were seen photographing the scene in the aftermath of the crash, while workers cleaned up debris from the road.
One car was wedged up against the central reservation by another vehicle, while a third had gone off the road.
A lorry was parked further up in the northbound lane, however, it is not known whether it was involved in the crash.
A police helicopter was seen hovering more than an hour later.
A queue of traffic stretched back almost mile from the slip road, where police were diverting drivers off the A19.
It was the second emergency incident on that stretch of road today.
One lane was closed shortly after 11am after a car caught fire near to Testo’s roundabout.
Police and firefighters were called to the northbound carriageway of the A19, at Testo’s after the Peugeot 307 burst into flames.
The fire was extinguished and nobody was injured.
