TWO men had to be cut free from the wreckage after a three-car crash.
Crews from Washington fire station were called to the A1231 westbound in the early hours of Tuesday when a Mitsubishi Colt, a Nissan Juke and a Vauxhall Vectra were involved in a crash.
Two men in the Vectra had managed to get out of the vehicle, but the drivers of the other two cars were trapped inside.
Crews from Birtley and Farringdon fire stations were called to the smash. Sixteen firefighters were on scene to cut the men free from the cars.
The 21-year-old man from the Colt and the 50-year-old man from the Juke, were taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital and the two men from the Vetra were taken to hospital as a precaution.
No one is believed to have been seriously injured.
