A MAN was airlifted to hospital after being involved in a serious crash on the A19.

The air ambulance was called out after a motorbike crashed into a car in the left-hand lane of the A19 southbound at North Hylton.

The biker was taken to the RVI in Newcastle for treatment on his injuries.

Nine police cars were at the incident, with the A19 shut for several hours while officers worked at the scene.

The smash happened shortly before 7pm on Wednesday night.

Northumbria Police are now appealing for witnesses to the crash.
