THE save made by former Sunderland goalkeeper Jimmy Montgomery to secure the Black Cats’ last major trophy win is one of the 10 most memorable moments witnessed by London’s Wembley Stadium, according to a new poll.

Montgomery’s double stop in the 1973 FA Cup final saw Second Division Sunderland overcome Leeds United to win football’s oldest cup competition.

It’s nice to still be mentioned even though it’s probably because Sunderland haven’t won anything since!

In a poll carried out by Travelodge to mark the opening of its 503rd UK hotel, near the national stadium, the moment that Hendon-born Montgomery kept out Peter Lorimer and Trevor Cherry came in at ninth place. It is the only save to make the list.

The survey of 2,000 adults revealed how obsessed the nation is with football as 15 football-related moments made the national all-time top 20 Wembley list.

Jimmy, 71, still Sunderland’s record appearance-maker, said: “It’s nice to still be mentioned, even though it’s probably because Sunderland haven’t won anything since!

“People always ask me about it when I’m at the Stadium of Light. It’s the grandparents these days rather than the parents, though.

“It makes it even more special, bearing in mind everything that’s gone on at Wembley.”

Topping the poll is the immortal line uttered by BBC commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme: “Some people are on the pitch. They think it’s all over ... it is now” as Geoff Hurst scored England’s fourth goal in the 1966 World Cup final against West Germany.

Just three music events made the top 20 listing, including Queen’s performance at Live Aid in 1985, along with the 1948 Olympics and one boxing event.

Topping the most memorable Wembley moments charts are the ever-contrasting fortunes of the England football team, with six of the top 10 involving key England fixtures.

The old Wembley was closed in 2000 and demolished before being rebuilt and reopened in 2007.
