VISITORS to Sunderland Minster’s gift shop will be treated to a free glass of bubbly as it celebrates its first birthday this weekend.
The shop has been a huge success since opening as Elaine Lawson, minster shop coordinator, and a healthy band of volunteers have served people looking for mementos.
Profits from the shop have been used towards the upkeep of the church.
Tomorrow, customers will be welcomed with celebratory drinks as the shop boasts its collection of new Christmas items, including Bethlehem nativity sets.
The Rev Martin Anderson, who is minster priest, said: “We have had a fantastic first year of trading at the minster, with visitors pleasantly surprised to discover our range of specialist cards, jewellery and church-related gifts.
“From students and young people buying fashionable crucifixes and rosary bracelets, to theatre-goers looking for traditional fudge or cinder toffee before a show, it’s been exciting for us to welcome people in a new way.”
The shop is open from 9am to 3pm, Monday to Saturday.
