Millers Inn
, Newcastle Road, Fulwell, Sunderland.
"I FORGOT to say: we are out of chicken breasts," said the cheery waitress as she brought over our glasses.
It may have been said with a smile, but it's not a statement you want to hear at a place where many of the choices consist of the absent ingredient.
Still, The Millers Inn managed to redeem itself.
Spacious and comfortable, the restaurant and bar area, part of the Harvester chain, is a good venue for a midweek meal.
It was recommended to me by a friend who has a young family – and it's easy to see why.
The layout and informality of the restaurant is perfect for families, while secluded corners and booths are more suited to couples.
In an American twist, you can top up your soft drinks for free, an added bonus in a restaurant with an already reasonable price list.
You can also dip into the salad bar as many times as you like, with its excellent range of salads, sauces, breads and vegetables.
As we perused the menu I was eyeing up a tasty-sounding blackened Cajun chicken burger – until I was told about the lack of chicken breasts.
My boyfriend John had also initially chosen a rather tempting barbecue chicken with bacon and Emmental cheese.
Forced to take a menu about-turn, I chose gammon steak (6.99) instead.
Lean and generously-sized, the gammon turned out to be a good choice.
It came with chips and a choice of egg or pineapple. The dish is a British tea-time staple, but it was tasty all the same.
John went for a 8oz sirloin steak (9.99) with a creamy peppercorn sauce and a side order of mushrooms.
It looked delicious and was cooked just to his liking.
For waistline watchers, there's also a a good range of low-fat dishes, a niche market neglected by most restaurants.
Considering the quality of the steaks, the menu was reasonable at a total of 23.30.
